Scuba Equipment Care and Maintenance: Keep Your Gear Ready All Winter

As the cooler months settle in, it’s the perfect time to give your scuba equipment the TLC it deserves. Proper care and maintenance over the winter period can help extend the lifespan of your gear, ensuring you’re ready to dive back in when the season warms up. At DiveMania Scuba, we’ve got you covered with tips, pool sessions, and courses to keep your skills sharp and your gear in peak condition!

1. Rinse, Dry, and Store Properly

Winter is the ideal time to thoroughly inspect, clean, and store your equipment:

  • Rinse Everything Thoroughly: Salt, sand, and even chlorine can degrade equipment over time. Start by giving all your gear a fresh-water rinse.

  • Dry Completely Before Storing: Trapped moisture can lead to mold, mildew, and even rust on metal parts, so make sure everything is completely dry before putting it away.

  • Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Avoid leaving your gear in extreme temperatures. A closet or dedicated storage space inside your home is a good choice for keeping your equipment safe and dry over winter.

2. Give Extra Attention to Key Pieces

Your regulator, BCD, wetsuit, and mask each deserve special care:

  • Regulator: Rinse, dry, and consider a professional service. Even small issues with the regulator can become big problems if neglected.

  • BCD: Rinse the interior bladder, and add a bit of BCD wash to keep it fresh. Inflate slightly to prevent the material from sticking and inspect all straps, buckles, and clips for wear.

  • Wetsuit: Use a wetsuit shampoo to remove any lingering salt or chlorine, then hang to dry on a wide hanger to avoid stretching.

  • Mask, Snorkel, and Fins: Rinse your mask and snorkel with fresh water and store your fins flat to prevent warping.
